PhD Candidate in History
Department

I am a PhD candidate in British history. My dissertation examines two events, the Opium War and the rise of naval steam power, as inseparable historical processes that, together, led to a new phase of globalization. I research the intersection between technology, culture, and empire, and also have wide-ranging interests in East-West interactions—especially the questions they raise about cultural commensurability and representation. My writing has been published in The Washington Post, The Diplomat, and The Globe and Mail.
