Juan Pedro Lamata is a PhD candidate in the Department of English at Stanford University. His dissertation, Masterless Renaissance: Subjectivity and Subjection from Utopia to Hell, explores competing discourses of mastery and masterlessness throughout the seventeenth century. Spanning works, authors, and genres in English and Spanish, from Europe and the Americas, Juan’s research considers how literature theorized life outside the bonds of traditional structures of service in a world increasingly dominated by abstract market forces.
