New Approaches to "Early Modern Things," with Molly Warsh (University of Pittsburgh), Surekha Davies (Utrecht University) & Cécile Fromont (Yale University)

What are the histories we write of and from objects? How do different approaches to material culture inform how we do this? This workshop emerges from work towards as second edition of Early Modern Things: Objects and Their Histories, 1500, ed. Paula Findlen (History Department, Stanford), first published with Routledge in 2013 based on a workshop held at Stanford. This CMEMS workshop brings in three colleagues, working on African art and material culture (Cecile Fromont, Yale University), commodities emerging from the early modern Iberian Atlantic (Molly Warsh, University of Pittsburgh), and global history of collecting (Surekha Davies, University of Utrecht), who are writing a new section of this book for the second edition. We welcome your engagement with this work in progress -- help us shape the revised edition of Early Modern Things.
