Off-Balance History: Rethinking Europe in the Eleventh Century

This paper reflects on what it means to write a history of eleventh-century Europe in 2022. It argues the case for an inclusive understanding of Europe as primarily a space, not a concept. It discusses some of the advantages that such a framework might offer the historian, with reference to the movement of queens, the transmission of knowledge, and systems of taxation, and suggests that this might provide fresh insights into the expansion of the Latin West that characterized the period.
